Lvn Program
The LVN program, or vocational nursing program, starts off on simple terms, gradually progressing into complex territory; a journey into human anatomy, physiology, human interaction and medical procedures.
Here is a rough outline of the LVN program:
During the first module, you are introduced to the following:
1. Simple anatomy
2. Physiology
3. Microbiology
4. Nutrition
5. Pharmacology
6. Medical terminology
7. Physical assessment
8. Nursing activities and the clinical atmosphere
The second module becomes more advanced:
1. Concepts of complex path-physiology
2. Taking care of patients with long term and acute illnesses
3. Core concepts of nursing
4. Preventive nursing care
5. Basic pathology
6. Methods of diagnosis and treatment
7. Medical and surgical conditions
8. Continued study of pharmacology
9. Relating theory and practice
The third module:
1. Caring for aging patients, at home and in healthcare surroundings.
2. More clinical experience
3. Client centered conferences to teach the practical application of classroom theory
4. Obstetrical client care
5. The effects of drugs during pregnancy, labor and delivery
6. Further relation of theory and practice in a supervised environment
The fourth module:
1. Concepts of leadership and supervision
2. These are practiced in either the acute or long term care facility
3. Continued study of obstetrical nursing
4. Introduction to Psychiatric Nursing and Mental Health
5. Your ability to provide effective and safe nursing care to assigned patients with minimal supervision
There are also some admission and coursework requirements for the LVN program. The following are taken into consideration for acceptance:
1. You have to be at least 18 years of age.
2. You must be in possession of a GED, or have graduated from high school.
3. You will be required to complete an “Ability to Benefit” (or similar) test.
4. Depending on the situation, you may be expected to pass an interview done by the nursing program director or associate program director.
5. Before an enrollment contract for the LVN program will be issued, you will have to pay all applicable fees, or come to an arrangement with the school.
6. There is a prerequisite course – Essential Medical Bioscience – that you will have to complete before you will be allowed to start the program. This might not be necessary if you have a previous medical background.
