LVN Training: Becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse
What is commonly known as an LVN, or a licensed vocational nurse, is in some states also known as a LPN, or a licensed practical nurse, and is even referred to as an RPN, or a registered practical nurse – in Canada. LVN training is aimed at those students who would like to start working as qualified nurses as soon as possible, yet have options available to be able to improve their careers through further study.
To be able to enroll into LVN training, you need to be in possession of a high school diploma, or a GED. Practical nurse training takes, depending on the student, one to two years to complete. Texas and California recognizes the LVN qualification, but other states consider it as similar to an LPN qualification for employment purposes.
In addition to being required to have a high school diploma or GED, you will be required to complete the Essential Medical Bioscience course (unless you have had previous medical education) to be able to enroll in the LVN program. Upon completion of the four modules of the LVN course (from an accredited institution), you still need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX-PN before you can start practicing as a nurse.
LVN training involves the study of various fields, including chemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, physical education, first aid, emergency medical technology, pregnancy and child growth. With the information spanning such a wide base, it would almost seem as if you can obtain all the necessary knowledge doing an online course alone. Unfortunately, there is an expectation requiring you to learn clinical practice and procedures under supervision. This means physical classes in a hospital. Fortunately, for those resorting to online study, most programs will help you to complete this part of your training in a local hospital.
Do keep in mind that any LVN training you sign up for has to be approved by your state’s Board of Nursing to allow access to the NCLEX-PN exam.
In addition, some states will have different requirements, including different licensing exam options, which may require some minor extra study.
